Research & verification methodology

EnvIndex is a market-intelligence directory, not a vendor endorsement. Its core rule is simple: absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

What qualifies for inclusion

EnvIndex covers organizations and artifacts that build, publish, or sell reinforcement-learning or agent environments, tasks, datasets, benchmarks, verifiers, simulations, or environment platforms. Infrastructure companies qualify only when they also offer actual environments, environment frameworks, hubs, or hosted benchmark scenarios. Infrastructure-only enablers such as generic browsers, sandboxes, and virtual machines are outside the company directory scope.

Entity types are kept distinct. Pure-play commercial vendors, data companies with environment offerings, benchmark or evaluation organizations, simulators, open-source projects, research organizations, incumbents, and acquired or inactive companies are not treated as interchangeable. Inclusion is not a recommendation.

Evidence model

Important claims should resolve to structured source records containing the URL, title, publisher, source type, publication date when known, access date, and verification status. Existing legacy profiles are being migrated incrementally; profiles without claim-level citations are labeled as awaiting structured verification rather than silently upgraded.

Source hierarchy

A primary company page confirms that a company made a claim; it does not independently validate outcomes, customer relationships, benchmark uplift, or security posture.

Customers and relationships

EnvIndex distinguishes a publicly confirmed customer, a company-claimed customer, a partnership, a benchmark user, an investor, a portfolio company, and an unverified relationship. Investor or portfolio relationships are never converted into customer claims. Logos and testimonials on a vendor site are company-reported unless independently corroborated.

Funding, teams, and fundraising

Funding totals are attached to dated rounds where evidence allows. Debt, grants, secondary transactions, and acquisitions are not silently mixed with equity funding. Team size should identify whether it is disclosed, reported by a professional network, or estimated. “Currently raising” is published only when a company has publicly disclosed or explicitly authorized that status; otherwise it is Unknown. EnvIndex does not publish confidential round targets.

Artifacts and private catalogs

An EnvIndex artifact page describes an environment, dataset, benchmark, verifier, or related training artifact; it does not imply that EnvIndex hosts or has audited the underlying files. Public sample, private commercial environment, and custom capability are separate states. Private means restricted access - not unverified. Custom capability does not imply ready-made inventory.

Comparisons and rankings

Comparisons show source-backed raw fields and preserve Unknown. EnvIndex does not currently publish an overall vendor ranking: the available evidence is too uneven to support a single product-quality score. Profile completeness measures documentation coverage, not quality. If rankings are introduced, market visibility, product maturity, commercial evidence, technical proof, and catalog strength will remain separate, with raw inputs and limitations exposed.

Freshness and corrections

Artifact and researched-company records display last-researched and last-verified dates. The editorial queue should revisit high-volatility claims - fundraising, pricing, customer status, security, availability, and private catalog inventory - at least every 90 days. Less volatile records are reviewed on a rolling basis. Sources older than 12 months may remain valid, but the claim is flagged when age materially affects reliability.

Anyone may submit a correction with the affected field, proposed value, explanation, and source. Companies may propose changes, but EnvIndex retains editorial control and does not allow a submitter to mark its own claims independently verified.

Conflicts and editorial independence

Relevant founder, vendor, investor, sponsor, or portfolio relationships should be disclosed on the affected profile. Paid placement must never alter verification status or editorial conclusions. EnvIndex currently states no operator identity because none is present in the repository; see About EnvIndex for the published editorial structure.
